Tidal Tyranny + Workshop

Workshop Fun

OK.
So about a month or so ago I was approached by a good friend of mine who thought it would be a great idea to run a workshop. I have never ran a workshop of any kind, so I thought why not!

Frankly the idea kind of scares me a little but non the less it will be a great experience for me
and for anyone who is interested in my work and my process.

So here we are - I'm a running a driftwood sculpting workshop at Pataka Gallery in Porirua
on the 6th of December. It will start at 11 am and go till 4pm.
$50 for the day.

All materials will be supplied, how ever if you have any great pieces of driftwood or seaweed you think might be a great addition feel free to bring it along!

Only 15 spots and they are filling up quick. So if you would like to come along or get more information please email me at
che.thorpe@gmail.com to secure a spot.

Thank you!!!!

Also this Tidal Tyrant below will be for sale at Black coffee in Newtown.

Searching for the carved ones

Slipped home to Gisborne for a quick trip and still found a bit of time to do some carving! Definitely enjoyed working at a larger scale and with a mallet and chisel.

I have giants up my hill

When I was a child the woods up Barkers hill, behind my home in Gisborne was a mystical and an enchanting place. Sometimes my imagination would run wild, I have vivid memories of being scared witless as the wind would be howling and the trees were groaning. I imagined the woods coming alive and giant woodland spirits descending upon my family and I.
Scale up my sculptures?

A gangly shadow of an interesting piece I found at Petone beach.
 Ash moon the dreamer

If you are born under the Ash moon (18 Feb- 17 March)
Your task in life is to illustrate to others how beautiful this world is and how we are the gardeners of not only this land but our own souls. Your challenge in life is to keep your feet firmly on the ground as you tend to daydream; you need to avoid living in outer space completely, if you do visit the outer realms you must come back.

Earthbound creations

My brother Ash and I working on turning this chunk of earth in to a wolf

The wolf howls and the materials protest as the elements deteriorates the form. Nothing is meant to last forever.. this wolf survived 3 days against the heat of the Gisborne summer sun.

A dormant Mayan lord, forfeited to the earth. The birds have staked their claim.
